My Role

UI/UX Designer

Project Manager

01. Overview

Subrise is a Shopify subscription management application designed to help merchants convert one-time shoppers into loyal, recurring customers. When I joined the project, Subrise was already live and gaining traction, making this a classic brownfield engagement. My role focused on evolving the product rather than reinventing it. I worked closely with developers and stakeholders to identify strengths, uncover friction points, and improve both merchant-facing and customer-facing experiences. The goal was to refine core workflows, modernize key interfaces, and support continued growth through thoughtful UX improvements and feature expansion.

02. Problem

Although Subrise was performing well, the product had reached a point where incremental improvements were necessary to maintain momentum. Merchant onboarding flows felt heavier than they needed to be, and key insights around subscription performance were not easily accessible at a glance. On the customer-facing side, customization options for the subscription portal and checkout widget were limited, making it harder for merchants to fully express their brand. As subscription products become increasingly competitive within the Shopify ecosystem, Subrise needed clearer analytics, more flexible controls, and a smoother overall experience for both merchants and their customers.

03. Design Process

The design process began with UX research focused on competitor subscription platforms and common patterns within the Shopify ecosystem. I collaborated with merchants and developers to understand real-world usage, uncover pain points, and identify opportunities for improvement. Insights from this research informed updates to onboarding flows, dashboard layouts, and subscription management tools. In parallel, I led design improvements for Subrise's marketing presence, including landing page updates, refined messaging, and SEO-conscious copy to better communicate value and ROI. Throughout the process, designs were validated against development constraints to ensure features could be shipped efficiently and iterated on confidently.

04. Solution & Results

The result was a series of targeted improvements across the Subrise platform. Merchant-facing workflows were streamlined, including a redesigned dashboard, clearer subscription analytics, automated reporting, and a simplified subscription plan creation flow. On the customer-facing side, the subscription portal and subscription/checkout widget were enhanced with greater customization, allowing merchants to better match their brand and offer flexible subscription options such as frequency selection and one-time versus recurring purchases. These updates strengthened Subrise's position as a scalable, flexible subscription platform, improving usability while supporting long-term merchant growth and recurring revenue.
